Four years ago, Qulliit decided to mark each International Women’s Day with the presentation of a Wise Woman of the Year Award. This award is meant to recognize a woman from Nunavut who is dedicated and committed to improving the lives of women and families in Nunavut. Each year we present this award as a way of honoring women who are role models in their community and who provide volunteer, counseling, and caregiver services to those in need.

The Council selects the recipient of the Nunavut Wise Woman Award from nominations received from across the territory. This year we received a variety of nominations, showcasing the various talents, efforts, and selflessness that many Nunavummiut women demonstrate on a daily basis.

This year, the council selected Dr. Patricia DeMaio of Iqaluit. After working for 4 years in Iqaluit, she served as the only physician in Pond Inlet for the next 9 years. During her time in the north, she readily learned to speak Inuktitut so that she could fully communicate with her patients. Her dedication to her work and the well-being of her patients is unsurpassed, and her passion for Nunavut is humbling to those around her. The Council was very proud to present this award to Patricia and wish her continued success.
