In the last few years, there has been remarkable progress with women in leadership positions in Nunavut. Everyone took note of our first lady Premier, Honourable Eva Aariak, who also holds the Qulliit Portfolio; Honourable Leona Aglukkaq being elected as Nunavut Member of Parliament and further as the Minister of Health in the Government of Canada; Okalik Eejeesiak being elected President of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association; and Dorothy Ningeocheak who became the first female Mayor of her community of Coral Harbour. Congratulations and way to go to all these women! Of course there were many more women appointed and elected into positions but those four in particular call for special mention. Qulliit president Donna Adams says, “I believe we will only see more women taking on these types of roles and being recognized and awarded for their hard work and dedication.”
