Qulliit is heavily involved in supporting and advocating about breast cancer. Women are such a huge part of every society with all the work that they do; it is not always their health that is placed first in their own lives. Many women neglect their own needs because they are so busy nurturing everyone around them.
I am happy to see that more Nunavummiut are making healthier choices, this is a part of that change in the air that is positive for today and for our future! Many women are starting to realize the dangers of cigarette smoking and are watching their cholesterol intake. I also see many people choosing to exercise more today. The project on Women and Cancer in Nunavut was originally initiated in 2001 and its focus was only on breast cancer. The purpose was to provide support for survivors and to increase awareness of breast health in Nunavut, and to develop comprehensive community level capacity building initiatives.
