Every year on March 8, millions of women and men around the world celebrate International Women’s Day. This day is an ideal opportunity to reflect on the progress made to advance women’s equality, to assess the challenges facing women in contemporary society to consider future steps to enhance the status of women and of course, to celebrate the gains made in these areas.
After Clara Zetkin, a German women’s rights activist gained support to hold an annual event in honor of women, the first ever International Women’s Day was held in four countries in 1911. Since then, countries, governments, and individuals have celebrated this day in recognition of women’s achievements and their struggle for equality. In 1977, the United Nations asked partnering states to declare a day for women’s rights and international peace. As a result, Canada followed the UN’s lead to select March 8th as International Women’s Day.
Support for March 8th is shown in various ways throughout the world. Political rallies, business conferences, government activities, theatrical and musical presentations, and crafts sales have all been organized as a symbol of solidarity towards women. It is an opportunity for Elders, women, men and children alike to show their support for the accomplishments and advancements that have been made towards women’s equality
The Qulliit Status of Women Council encourages all communities to organize their own special event for this important day. This can be done in various ways including holding a craft sale, talent show, small gathering at the local shurch or school, or by hosting a feast.
