Take Back the Night
Take Back the Night is an international rally and march that is organized in local communities with the purpose of unifying women, men, and children in an awareness of violence against women, children and families. The event is a collaboration of community and other interested persons who are ready to take a stand against violence and make our communities safe for everyone.
National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is on December 6. Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day coincides with the sad anniversary of the death of 14 young women who were tragically killed on December 6, 1989 at l’École Polytechnique in Montréal because of their gender. Beyond commemorating the loss of these 14 young lives, this day represents a time to pause and reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society. It is also a time to have a special thought for all the women and girls who live daily with the threat of violence or who have died as a result of deliberate acts of gender-based violence. Last but not least, it is a day for communities to reflect on concrete actions that each Canadian can take to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.
International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is on March 8. In 1977, the United Nations adopted a resolution inviting countries to dedicate one day to celebrating the rights of women. It is an occasion to highlight the progress made, to celebrate the gains in the fight for women’s rights and to consider future steps to improve women’s equality.
This is a day that men and women around the world pause to contemplate and celebrate the lives of women. People from all countries divided by ethnic, linguist, cultural, economic and political difference come together to mark women’s accomplishments and advancements towards women’s equality. Each year on March 8, Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council invites all Nunavummiut to reflect on the lives of women and girls in our territory, our sisters, our mothers, our daughters and our friends: their endurance, their talents and their strengths. Each year Qulliit helps organize various community based events to celebrate the accomplishments of women across our territory.
